An Interview with James Marten

Our conversation with James Marten, chair of the History Department at Marquette University and author of “The Ubiquitous Mr. Tanner,” an article published in the spring 2014 issue of The Civil War Monitor. Dr. Marten discusses Tanner in further detail, including his status as a Gilded Age celebrity and his ardent advocacy for veterans. Marten also offers up how his article fits into his larger book project, America’s Corporal: James Tanner in War and Peace, which will be published by the University of Georgia Press in the spring of 2014.
