An Interview with Elizabeth Leonard

Our interview with Elizabeth Leonard, the John J. and Cornelia V. Gibson Professor of History at Colby College and author of Lincoln’s Forgotten Ally: Judge Advocate General Joseph Holt of Kentucky. In this Lincoln Prize winning work, Dr. Leonard offers a fuller assessment of this complex man that goes beyond his role in the Lincoln Assassination trial. Dr. Leonard also discusses her approach to teaching the Civil War that calls for her students to question what they assume they know about the war.
