An Interview with Jaime Martinez

Our conversation with Jaime Martinez, an Assistant Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and author of “Confederate Slave Impressment in the Upper South,” now out with University of North Carolina Press. In the interview, Dr. Martinez details the evolution of slave impressment policy within the Confederacy and how its evolution mirrored Confederate governance as a whole as it became increasingly centralized. In addition, Dr. Martinez also highlights two Civil War books that have been of great interest to her of late and how they factor into how she approaches teaching the Civil War in the classroom.
